O has proven to be a very interesting movie for me. I enjoy making the connections from the characters in Othello to the characters in the film. Hugo is a master manipulator and is getting everything to go just the way he wanted to, if not better. But as a viewer it is difficult to watch him do this to everyone around him solely for the attention of his father. When Hugo goes to eat dinner with his dad in his office, we don't see his dad at all until he gets up to leave. We only hear his voice as he talks to Hugo about Odin, really showing the distance that is between them.
I also think it is interesting how the theme of racism is playing out in this film. Although the black hawk is supposed to be representative of the dark spirited Hugo, I can't help but make the connection of there being one black hawk and one black Odin. He is the only black basketball player and only black student at the school as far as we know. And there is only one balck hawk among countless white doves. I also thought it was particularly interesting when Desi and Emily are discussing Desi and Hugo's weekend trip. Desi is raped by Odin and still finds ways to try and justify it. Emily doesn't react the way Desi wants her to and asks Emily if she would be reacting the same if Odin was white.
This film shows how dangerous love can be, it also concentrates on racism and exploits the human emotions of jealousy on multiple levels.

ReplyDeleteI like how you brought up the one hawk and one Odin...and I thought at the end the connection Hugo makes with Odin and the hawk is really interesting...he was describing the hawk as "unique, strong and powerful"; something others birds should be and, in his mind, are jealous of...and then he says that Odin is the hawk that he wants to be...do you think there is any kind of connection there?
